Tuning in to Christmas

Every year, I can’t wait to start listening to Christmas songs. To me, they’re by far the best thing about the holiday, outscoring all the warmth and richness of a pristine home snuggled into seasonal decorations, all the sugar and spice of Yuletide cooking, and yes, even the joy of packages concealed in festive wrapping paper under a twinkling tree.

But when is it a good time to start spinning those holiday tunes? Ever since, when I was 10 or so, a friend at school told me that it was bad luck to listen to Christmas songs outside of Christmas, the matter has been a concern of mine. And because it certainly won’t do to listen to them only on the one Christmas Day in the year, I figured out a firm date for myself. It’s neither too early, falling within the Advent season, nor too late, allowing me just under a month to listen through the multitude of winter rhymes and percussion arrangements, until finally I have jingle bells coming out of my ears (and loving the saturation very much).

And the best thing about the date (at least this year) is that it’s today! Though it may not be a marshmallow world out there just yet, because today is 1 December, I’m putting on those Christmas records and officially initiating preparations for a wonderful Christmastime. On that note, what are some of your favourite Christmas songs? I’m constantly looking to expand my repertoire!

One, two, one-two-three-four…

Darling wife plays Christmas tunes all year, so she sets the bar. That means you can do it anytime. ;-) Her fave is "Walking in a Winter Wonderland," though not this particular version (my favorite) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsAHrwKFE-I
